The claim that the photo shows the dollars Amir of Qatar brought Turkey by plane

CLAIM / Photo: The dollars Amir of Qatar brought by plane to Turkey.

FALSE

It was claimed on Twitter with a photo shared on August 15, 2018 that there were bulks of dollars on Amir of Qatar Sheikh Temim bin Hamed Al Sani’s plane arriving to Turkey.

The user named Sosyal Bedevi also claimed on a tweet same day that the Amir brought with himself 35-40 billion dollars. This tweet was shared 1,300 times and was liked 4,000 times. The same claim was shared by the Facebook page named Yook Artık and has been shared 3 thousand times and liked 18 thousand times.

Akit TV national broadcast channel shared the picture with similar claims on its website.

Picture reads: You thought these are Qatar Amir’s wardrobe right? No, It’s the money Amir Tamim brought for Turkey. Qatar is investing 15 billion dollars to our country. May you live long.

However the claim that the picture shows Qatar Amir’s plane arriving Turkey is not correct. The picture belongs to a cargo plane departing from Doha and landing to Bermuda International Airport in 2017.

The picture is from 2017

The picture used in these claims depicts a Qatar Airways plane which had landed in L. F. Wade Airport in Bermuda Island – overseas soil of the UK- on the morning of April 6, 2017. It was stated on the news piece by Bernews on April 6, 2017 that a cargo plane had landed in Bermuda which carried black packaged cargo boxes as in the picture. The press spokesperson of the Skyport company which is responsible for the ground services of the airport expressed in the news piece that black packaged cargo boxes were brought to Bermuda for the American Cup.

The picture is not from the capital Ankara

It is possible to reach other photos of the plane shot from different angles in the news piece where the plane is claimed to be a Boeing 777- 200LR/F. From these photos it is possible to see that the picture subject to the claim is taken from the Bernews news piece.

The airport control tower in the photos used by Bernews attracts attention, as it is the control tower of Bermuda International Airport.

F. Wade International Airport control tower.

In addition to that, it is possible to see that the control tower is the same as the one on the picture on the Google Maps street view.

Qatar Amir’s fleet does not have a plane with the same model as the plane on the picture

It is possible to learn from Qatar Airways report dated March 19, 2017 that Boeing 777-200LR model is used as a cargo plane. Also there are videos where the same model of plane is used by Qatar Airways.

On the news piece of Cumhuriyet newspaper dated February 13, 2016, the plane by which Qatar Amir visited Turkey is given space. Al Sani had used a Boeing 747 in his previous travel. It is also possible to reach all the information on the number and models of all planes in the fleet of Qatar Emirate on Airfleets. There is no Boeing 777-200LR/F model plane on this catalogue.

Another picture used for the claim shared on social media can be found on Arab News’ January 24, 2018 news piece.

This news piece features the new cargo security scanning methods to be applied between the United States Transportation Security Administration and Qatar Airways. The image can be accessed on AFP news agency’s website as well.

As a result, the plane does not belong to the Qatar Amir. The mentioned picture shows a cargo plane of Qatar Airways landing in Bermuda on April 6, 2017.
