The claim that “TAMAM” and “DEVAM” tweets were sent from abroad

CLAIM / Photo: T A M A M (Enough!) and D E V A M (Go on!) tweets were posted from the United States and other countries abroad.

FALSE

The word “T A M A M” (Enough!) topped the Trends list on Twitter after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s speech at the Justice and Development Party (AKP) group meeting on May 8, regarding the June 24 election, saying “If one day our people tell us ‘Enough!’ only then we will step aside.” Herewith that, the word “D E V A M” (Go on!) also entered the Trends list in Turkey.

Based on a visual, it was claimed on the social media that most of the T A M A M tweets were posted from the United States and other countries abroad. Likewise, with a similar visual, it was stated that most of the D E V A M tweets were posted from the US. In the news websites like Sabah and Akşam, it was stated that the T A M A M tweets were posted from the US.

However, the claim that the visual shared on the social media depicts where T A M A M and D E V A M tweets are posted from is false. These visuals depicting the screenshots from the onemilliontweetmap website, do not show where a tweet is posted from, because search of any word written with blanks between the letters give the same result on this website. Hence the reason that tweets appear to have been posted from other countries is that there are blanks between the letters of the word.

It is possible to observe similar cases on the onemilliontweetmap website. For the searches of “S E Ç İ M” (election) and “D O L A R” (dollar) words, top five countries from where tweets are posted are the US, Brazil, Turkey and the United Kingdom just like the searches of T A M A M and D E V A M tweets.

The result is different when there is no blank between the letters

The searches for TAMAM and DEVAM words give different results when there is no blank between the words. The users can see information regarding the tweets posted within the last 20 hours on the onemilliontweetmap website.

(The screenshots are taken on May 9, 2018, at around 9 p.m. New searches may give different results as the website shows the data from last 20 hours.)

It can be seen that 48 thousand 806 tweets are posted including the word DEVAM with no blanks between the letters. Top 5 countries posting these tweets go as Türkiye, Turkey, Türkei, Deutschland and Cyprus.

There are 12 thousand 479 tweets posted including the word TAMAM with no blanks between the letters according to the data of last 20 hours. Top 5 countries posting these tweets go as Türkiye, Turkey, Deustchland, United States and United Kingdom.

The visual AKP Spokesperson Mahir Ünal has shared is a screenshot from the onemilliontweetmap website, using its Heat Map function. Ünal’s tweet was shared by the news websites Sabah and CNN Türk.

Here as well the visual looks like this because the word T A M A M is searched with blanks between the letters.

However, the word TAMAM without blanks between the letters give the result where it can be seen that most of the tweets are posted from Turkey.

Founder of onemilliontweetmap: “Searches made with blanks between the letters won’t work”

Founder of maptimize (onemilliontweetmap) and xilinus.com Sébastien Gruhier expressed in his commentary to teyit.org that searches made with blanks between the letters as in T A M A M won’t work because that way the search will function for each letter separately. Gruhier said that “The search function is fixed in a way that when the words with separate letters are searched in quotation marks like “T A M A M” will give the correct results.”

In the MapD website, it is possible to see that TAMAM and DEVAM words are tweeted from Turkey

The MapD website can be used for the tweets posted by users whose location information is on.

Among the 388 million 805 thousand 958 tweets shared between May 1 2018 and May 9 2018, 13 thousand 691 tweets are posted with location information on. It is not possible to make searches of words with blanks between the letters on this website. Hence it is not possible to include the tweets including words with blanks between the letters like T A M A M in this search. Likewise, there are 894 tweets including the word DEVAM shared between May 1 2018 and May 9 2018 with location information on. On the below map the yellow locations are the places where these tweets are posted from. When looking at these maps, it is possible to see that tweets are shared mostly from Turkey.

To create an accurate map, users are needed to be sharing their locations

To be able to make location-based hashtag and word tracking, it is necessary to have the users turn their location information on. There is no open source database to show where the tweets are posted from when the users’ location information is not on. Another method of Twitter mapping through identifying of the location can be through investigating the profiles of the people who share their location on their profiles.

In the case where the location information is not on, it is not possible to know where the tweets are posted from unless IP addresses of the users are known. Twitter shares IP information only when courts detect a crime conducted by a user.

Another point to take into consideration about location information of the people who post tweets is the use of Virtual Private Network (VPN). It is possible to make data exchange through VPNs which enable connection to different networks through remote access as if being physically connected to that network.
