It was asserted that a photo which was shared on social media and sent to teyit.org shows Freddie Mercury and İbrahim Tatlıses who were claimed to be friends, side by side.
The photo uploaded to Twitter on November 13, 2018 by a user named “Satrayni” received approximately 4,000 likes. The image was shared by the same user on Instagram as well and liked by 4,314 users. Besides, other Twitter accounts posted this photo.
“as long as friendship is sincere, hope never ends”
However, the claim that İbrahim Tatlıses and Freddie Mercury are side by side in the relevant photo is false. In the original photo, İbrahim Tatlıses posed with the composer and songwriter, Burhan Bayar who worked with Tatlıses for many years. Therefore it can be said that the image shared on social media was an example of photomontage.
After messaging with Burhan Bayar via Twitter, it was learnt that the original photo was taken in İzmir Ekici Över Music Hall in 1984.
The image was produced with a photomontage technique
Compared with its original, it can be concluded that the photo shared on “Satrayni” page was produced with a photomontage technique. The original photo can be found in an interview of Hürriyet Newspaper with Burhan Bayar who stated “İbrahim is my master. He is the person who helps and values me the most.”
Mercury’s face was cropped from another photo
It can be seen that the face of Freddie Mercury used in the relevant image was cropped from another photo taken by the photographer Margaret Olah. The original version of Mercury’s photo is shown below.
Actually, the account named “Satrayni” that first posted the photo is a humorous page. It shares funny videos and images subjected to photo montage. There are numerous posts as such on profile page of Satrayni.
Was the photo taken in Afyon concert of Queen in 1987?
Several Instagram users claimed, based on the photo showing Freddie Mercury and İbrahim Tatlıses side by side, that the photo was probably taken when Queen gave a concert in Afyon in 1987. Nevertheless, it can be said that this claim is also false.
According to the concert archive of Queen, the group did not perform a concert in Turkey as a full band. Only, the performance of the Queen guitarist, Brian May before the concert of Guns’n Roses held at İnönü Stadium in 1993 can be found in the archive.
The last concert was given in the UK on August 9, 1986 by the full band which comprised Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor. The year of this concert is one year before the claimed concert in Afyon. Considering the above information, it can be said that the performance of Queen in Afyon is an urban myth.
The claim that Queen performed a concert in Afyon in 1987 was first made on September 16, 2007 on Ekşi Sözlük which is a collaborative dictionary based on user contribution. Title of this claim turned into a humorous topic.
