The claim that 225,000 Syrians gave birth in Turkey in the last six month

CLAIM: In the last six months, 225,000 Syrians in Turkey gave birth.

FALSE

It was asserted in a post shared in social media and sent to teyit.org as a notice that 225,000 Syrians gave birth in Turkey in the last six months.

The claim shared on Twitter on September 22, 2018 by a user was liked by approximately 5,500 times. This claim published on Facebook on September 24, 2018 by a page named “Karanlıktaki Aydınlık” was shared by about 4,000 people.

TW: 225 thousand Syrians gave birth in our country in last six months. This number is more than our 11 city’s population. Turkish nation needs to wake up from the slow slumber.

In Turkey, the location of Syrian refugees, 280,000 Syrian babies were born in six years

However, the claim that 225,000 Syrians gave birth in Turkey in the last six months is not true. From 2011 in which Syrian refugees first entered Turkey to 2017, 276,158 Syrian children were born in Turkey.

The report titled “Syrians in Turkey” published by Ombudsman Institution (KDK) in 2018 gives information about the Syrian babies born in Turkey. The report states that 248,462 children were born between 2011 in which Syrian refugees began to come Turkey, and July 1, 2017 (pg. 113). According to the said report, this figure rose to 276,158 from 2011 to December 11, 2017 (pg. 153).

In other words, it can be understood that Syrian refugees gave 27,696 births within six months between July and December 2017.

Migration and Adaptation Report dated March 2018 prepared by TBMM (Grand National Assembly of Turkey) Sub-commission for Refugee Rights specifies the delivery of 170,000 Syrian babies in the last four years and that the Syrian babies born in Turkey up to now exceeded 250,000.

Number of the Syrian babies born in Turkey goes up

Information about the deliveries of Syrian refugees in Turkey can be obtained from the reports published by the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) as well.

The report of AFAD titled “Our Syrian Siblings in Companion Territories” and dated 2016 provides various data regarding the Syrian refugees. The report indicates the delivery of 151,746 Syrian babies throughout Turkey until March 9, 2016. Besides, Mehmet Ali Torunoğlu, Vice President of the Public Health Agency of Turkey reported to TBMM Commission for Refugee Rights on November 3, 2016 that 177,000 Syrian babies were born in Turkey by now.

That is to say, it can be understood that almost 25,000 babies were born in Turkey between March 9, 2016 and November 3, 2016.

According to the report of AFAD titled “Population Movements from Syria to Turkey” published in 2014, a total of 11,249 deliveries happened as of April 14, 2014 (pg. 6). Lastly, another report of AFAD dated 2013 states that 6,701 children were born in Turkey in 2013 (pg. 52).

Prof. Dr. Murat Erdoğan, Head of Political Science and International Relations at Turkish – German University studied on the Syrian refugees as well. Erdoğan informs that the number of Syrian babies born in Turkey is 224,750 as of June 15, 2017. In the study of Erdoğan named “Syrians Barometer” which was published as a book later, it is pointed out that 306 Syrian babies were delivered a day by November 2017.

Assuming that the birth rate which is 306 per day is stable, approximately 55,000 babies have to be born in Turkey within the last six months. Even when the birth rate is assumed to show a threefold increase, about over 165,000 babies have to be delivered in the last six months.

In other words, the delivery of 225,000 babies within six months is impossible depending on the current birth rate. As is mentioned above, the figure calculated with the birth rate raised by threefold is still quite below the figure claimed on social media.

teyit.org communicated with Murat Erdoğan about the issue. Erdoğan specified that the claimed number is false and said:

“The relevant figure is not true. In 2017, 112,000 babies were recorded. Of course, some babies apart from this could not be recorded, but I suppose that the number of unrecorded babies does not exceed 10,000, because healthcare services are not offered to them. In 2018, 140,000 recorded babies are expected. This figure corresponds to 400 per day based on the recent update. According to my calculation, the number of babies born in Turkey from May 2011 to date is at least 350,000. It may be a greater number, but it can never be 225,000 babies in six months.”

In Turkey, 1,291,055 babies were born in 2017

In the bulletin of the Turkish Statistical Institute published on May 8, 2018, it is reported that the number of babies born alive in Turkey in 2017 is equal to 1,291,055. This figure means that about 645,000, 107,000 and 3,500 babies were delivered semi-annually, monthly and daily, respectively.
