The allegation that Fethullah Gülen said he looked positively towards presidential system

CLAIM:  “I look positively towards both presidential system and a presidency with increased powers” Fethullah Gülen told in an interview with Zaman daily in 1997.

An article alleged to be published by Zaman daily in 1997 and Fetullah Gülen’s remarks on the presidential system have been circulated on social media, in news sites such as Oda TVBirGünABC NewspaperT24Gerçek Gündem and Sputnik as well as in an article by Saygı Öztürk, Ankara Representative of Sözcü daily. According to the allegations, in an interview with Zaman daily in 1997, Gülen told:   

“The groundwork for the presidential system should be laid, our people should be prepared. A presidency with increased powers could be a landing-stage, a launching pad or a take off point.  However, issues that concern our people’s present day and future must be debated in broader platforms. Personally I look positively towards both presidential system and a presidency with increased powers.”

Gülen’s comments on the presidential system were included in the story titled “Call for Common Sense” which was published above the fold on March 30, 1997 by Zaman daily.
