The video, shared on Facebook on January 29, 2020, was viewed by 500,000 people and shared by 5,000 users. Also, it was shared in Arabic and English.
The video, for the first time, was downloaded on TikTok in January, when the epidemic started, by a user called @damiangelsenhuys. The account is now private but its profile picture offers some clues.
When the blue symbol on the t-shirt in the profile picture is searched on the internet, the symbol is found to belong to the Lowveld Venom Suppliers, serving in the Republic of South Africa. The company has a voluntary manager, named Andrew Geldenhuys.
AFP fact-checker team reached Andrew Geldenhuys and confirmed that he is the father of Damian, who shot the video. His father said the video was shot around 28 January at a high school in Gauteng and was not related to the coronavirus. He added that it was a kind of performance and called “bomskok”.
Teyit could not get any answer from Andrew Geldenhuys about the issue yet.
- The people in the video have summer clothes. It is winter in China.
- People who are considered to be doctors because of their white clothes walk around others without mask and protection. It is hardly possible for them to walk around people with the coronavirus in such a time that more than 40,000 people got infected.
- People are standing up towards the end of the video.
The performances of “bomskok”, in which students gather and move synchronically, can be seen in the various high schools in that region.
In conclusion, the claim that the video shows people who are coronavirus patients and doctors is not true. The post in question is an example of a “false connection”.
