Does the photo show a baby platypus?

CLAIM: The creature in the photo is a baby platypus.

FALSE

Teyit got the notice that the photo, shared in some groups of Facebook, shows a baby platypus. The photo was shared on 18 February 2020 and got 7,500 likes. On Twitter, it got 7,000 likes.

When we look for the photo by the reverse visual search method, we find that the photo was firstly shared by Serbian artist Vladimir Matić-Kuriljov on an online platform of artist portfolios seven months ago.

When we search the name of the artist on Instagram, we find his post about the baby platypus.

Serbian artist shared the new photos of the sculpture, called “Stone Baby Platypus”, on 14 February and wrote its story by popular demand.

Kuriljov produces different artworks such as comic books, animation, portrays, caricature, miniature, sculpture, realistic make-up, and modeling. The baby platypus sculpture was made of paste and colored by acrylic paint.

The news about that the photo belongs to sculpture was released in some websites such as iflscience and Mirror.

The natural habitat of a platypus is Australia and Tasmania. The lineage of the platypus, which is classified as mammals and beaked animals, is under threat due to global climate change. According to researchers at the Sydney-based University of New South Wales Centre for Ecosystem Science, the number of platypi may decrease by 47-66 percent over the next 50 years, if measures for climate change are not taken.

In conclusion, the claim that the photo shows a baby platypus is not true. The post in question is an example of a false connection.
